Rare Books Library
A Rare Books LIbrary in Boston’s North End

GSD Spring 2009 | Critic: Eric Howeler

In the North End area of Boston, a library for rare books is proposed within a well-established urban fabric. The trapezoidal and triangular polygons are used as a basis for the development of spatial relationships in plan and section. The basement level contains the rare book stacks and receives light from ‘light falls’ that extend beyond the building massing. The ground level is a public zone that allows for visitors to visit the library or simply bypass it completely. The second level contains the rest of the program and consists of volumes that interlock with adjacent volumes in a manner which allows them be structural.
